Dr. Rod Hoff is the newly named Executive Director of the REDI Centre in Singapore.  In this capacity he will be working on emerging disease problems in the Southeast Asian region. The REDI Centre is jointly supported by the Ministry of Health of Singapore and the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States.

Before coming to REDI Centre, Dr. Hoff worked on national and international aspects of HIV/AIDS at the National Institutes of Health of United States.  In the mid-1980s he developed a novel technique for determining the seroprevalence of HIV in childbearing women, which produced the first national estimates of HIV infection in the United States.  During his career at the NIH, he organized and directed the HIVNET and HPTN clinical trial networks for evaluating HIV vaccines and other preventive interventions for HIV/AIDS.  For the past 5 years, he has led the Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA), which provides long-term research and infrastructure support to research organizations in developing countries to enhance their capabilities and capacity to conduct HIV/AIDS research relevant to their populations.  In addition to AIDS, Dr. Hoff has conducted research on Chagas’ disease, schistosomiasis, Leishmaniasis, toxoplasmosis, malaria and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. 

Dr. Hoff has a Doctoral Degree in epidemiology and infectious diseases from Harvard University School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts.  Before coming to NIH he held faculty positions at Harvard School of Public Health and Tufts Medical School, conducted infectious disease research in Brazil, and worked on public health programs in Thailand and Vietnam.
